Color Can Make the Ordinary Extraordinary
Color can change the mood of a room, the look of a piece of furnitureand highlight details that didn't stand out before. Take, for example, a built in bookcase.Paint the back wall of the bookcase an eye popping red and you have created anattention getting focal point in a room. Details such as decorative moldingsand ornate fireplace surrounds become more powerful when they are painted adifferent color than the walls around them. The stronger the contrast in color, the more the item will pop.
Contemporary interiors lack the ornate details found in traditionalconstruction so color becomes an excellent way to define particular areas andhighlight special items. A bold paint color can be used to accent a painting ort he wall can be the work of art by defining it with a different color. I havepainted each room in a small condo a different color and the entire condo becomes a Mondrian type of artwork. Around each corner was a new surprise.
There is color to suit any feeling you might want to create. Green is a calmer nature color where yellow is a vibrant nature color. Orange represents fun and we all know purple is a regal color. Red is a great way to evoke a sense of passion or increase stimulation. Many red dining rooms have stimulated conversation. If you aren't comfortable doing an entire room in red think about using it as an accent wall.Be careful of the trim color you select for a red room. You don't want it to look like a candy cane.
I like to see the color on the walls envelope the room and set the mood. The color on the wall does not have to be in any of the fabrics in the room. It needs to complete the room and accentuate the fabrics and furniture. It's the backdrop for the story you are telling with your furnishings.
